Horror escape rooms are the category groups argue about most: some want exactly that, others not under any circumstances. This article explains what separates a horror room from a thriller, how to make the right call for your group, and how scary The Ring at Escape City in Zurich really is.

What makes a horror escape room

  • Darkness. You work with torches or very little light, the main difference to regular rooms.
  • Jump scares. Sounds, movement, sudden light. Not constantly, but deliberately placed.
  • Atmosphere instead of gore. Good horror rooms rely on tension, not blood.
  • The puzzles stay puzzles. If you keep a clear head, you get as far as in any other room, it just takes longer because your nerves join in.

How scary is The Ring?

The Ring is our only true horror room: dark, with jump scares and a story you know from the film without having to have seen it. Difficulty 7 of 8, meaning demanding puzzles for 2 to 6 players, 60 minutes. We recommend it from age 16 and only for groups that enjoy being scared. We advise against it during pregnancy. If you walk out with your heart pounding and laughing, you picked the right room. If you are hesitant beforehand, take Resident Evil instead: thriller atmosphere, but no jump scares.

What to know beforehand

  • You can leave at any time. The door is never really locked; the game master sees and hears you and opens immediately.
  • Nobody touches you. The effects are technical, there are no actors who make contact.
  • Say beforehand who is nervous. The game master adjusts accordingly.
  • Go as four or five. As a pair The Ring is more intense; as six the tension gets lost in the crowd.

Horror escape rooms in Switzerland: what to look for

The scene has grown; Zurich, Basel, Bern and Lucerne all have horror rooms of varying intensity. Ask three things before booking: are there actors or only technology, how dark is it, and from what age does the provider recommend the room. Whoever answers that honestly usually has a good room too.
