Riddles work for kids because they need a story: the treasure is hidden, the suitcase is locked, the code is somewhere in the room. At Escape City we have been building puzzles for adults and families since 2022. Here are ten ideas that work at home with everyday materials, sorted by age.

Riddles from age 6

  1. Treasure map with steps. A sketch of the flat, an X, and instructions like “5 steps from the fridge towards the window”. Materials: paper, pen, a treasure.
  2. Picture sequence as a code. Four pictures on the wall (apple, dog, sun, car), each with a digit. The order of the pictures in a book gives the code for the combination lock.
  3. Jigsaw with a message. Print a photo, write the next task on the back, cut it into pieces.

Riddles from age 8

  1. Mirror writing. Write the clue backwards; it is read in the bathroom mirror.
  2. Invisible ink. Write with lemon juice, reveal with a hairdryer. An adult stays with the hairdryer.
  3. Combination lock on the suitcase. A 3-digit lock, the three digits spread over three riddles: number of chairs at the table, page number in the favourite book, house number.
  4. Letter grid with elimination. A grid full of letters; cross out every letter of the child’s name, and the rest spells the solution word.

Riddles from age 10

  1. Caesar cipher. Every letter shifted by three places; the key “+3” is hidden somewhere.
  2. Morse code with a torch. Short-long signals, the table lies next to it. Good in pairs.
  3. The false clue. Three notes, two contradict each other, one matches a detail in the room. That trains exactly what counts in a real escape room: observing instead of guessing.

What makes escape room puzzles different from home

In the real room the puzzles interlock: the code from the picture opens the drawer, in the drawer is the key to the next station, and the clock is running. Then there is the set. In Ninja Turtles (difficulty 6 of 8) it is the Ninja Turtles’ hideout, in Titanic (4 of 8) the ship. Together with Star Wars these are our family rooms: from age 12 children play on their own, younger ones with an adult in the room. For a children’s birthday party there are packages with cake and a lounge for the parents.

Five rules for riddles that do not frustrate kids

  • One riddle, one idea. Not two mechanics in one task.
  • The clue is in plain sight; the solution needs thinking.
  • After five minutes without progress comes a tip, not a reproach.
  • Every solved riddle opens something physical: lock, box, door.
  • At the end there is a treasure, even if it is just the cake.
